Taxes can be used for good, and taxes can be beneficial. However, raising the current taxes will not be beneficial or used for good. Raising the taxes is only suggested by politicians because they want to spend more outrageous amounts of money which we do not have. Just as Curtis S. Dubay’s “yes” article states, “they should propose to immediately cut [government] spending.” Raising taxes is not the cure for our current predicament; doing so will just cause more problems. This extra tax “will damage economic growth by lowering the incentives to work, save, and invest. This will stifle job creation, further slowing the growth of already stagnant wages” (Dubay). No one likes taxes, of course, but almost all citizens can understand the necessity of a small tax. The idea the American citizens and myself cannot wrap their head around is having huge taxes, paying out more than we have, and creating a larger deficit. So, yes, Americans are being taxed too much and that money is not being used in the way it should be, thereby making the high taxes even more frustrating.
I agree with your argument that although taxes benefit us in small amounts, they have the possibility to destroy our lower classes if increased at this time. I think it is incredible that Americans understand that taxes give them opportunities and support their government, but I also think it is just as valuable for them to deduce that an increase in taxes is unwise.
The idea that people are overtaxed, and are not going to the right thing are very easy for people to assume, especially when the country is in huge debt. While I do not believe Americans should necessarily be taxed more, I believe prioritizing the tax money would be beneficial to get money to all programs that are essential (education, social security). However, I do believe the majority of the money today is going to the good of the community showing it is necessary for the United States citizens to pay taxes.
When confronted with the question, "Are Americans overtaxed?", most citizens will agree that we are indeed overtaxed. However, sometimes we reply too hastily and forget to remember what our tax payer's dollars do for the nation and each of us individually. For example, money collected goes to common areas we see daily, including quality day cares, federally funded health care, education, bridges, sewers, roads, parks, and other places. It also goes to our army, navy, government representatives, defense spending, and other key programs. Overall, I believe taxes should remain at a bare minimum, but I also understand the importance of taxes and the contribution each citizen needs to make in order for this nation to continue to grow.
I agree that taxes have many benefits and will overall improve the country. Having a contribution from each citizen at a bare minimum of taxes will make the economy better, but I believe if more people were taxed, education could be better, and more money could be going to that, while still having enough to support the people working.
Everyone is worried about money and they will say that citizens are taxed too much because it costs them money. I agree that taxes are used for purposes for our own sake, but the question is does ALL of our taxes go towards those purposes? Or are they used for purposes that only a few government officials know about? Better yet, go towards a website that (from what I heard) costs a couple million dollars and isn't even functional?
I completely understand your point that taxes are necessary for some key programs, however, I believe that our government has become ridiculously irresponsible with our money. Also, I believe that adding to our already high taxes will not decrease our debt because the government will just spend that additional money rather than saving it. Therefore, I believe it is most fiscally responsible of our government to lower taxes and cut unnecessary spending.
Americans today face the question if they are being overtaxed, and everyone has different opinions on the subject. Taxes are used to improve society and to make education, health care, social security, and many other things available to the people. While education, road conditions, and social security need to be a top priority, families still need to be able to provide for their family, and still have saving money after taxes are taken out. Taxes are a good thing though, and there are many good reasons for them to where they can make the United States more unified and a great place for all people. The view of taxes may seem high right now, but they provide the education the generation needs to succeed, the transportation of goods the country needs, and financial stability for people who cannot make a living on their own. This article had both points of view and both had good points to make, but I believe it should remain the same to ensure the United States has the best programs and ideas to make the country better.
I agree with your argument, that taxes do benefit our country. No one wants to give there money away but if Americans realize what they are paying for maybe they will be more willing. I also agree that the taxes are not that high, they have been higher in the past, and if they are benefiting the people then they should not change. However we do need to make sure that they are helping our country not not hindering it.
I agree with you that people need to be able to pay for their family before they need to pay taxes, but I believe taxes are not over priced, if they were lower nothing would get payed for and there would be more problems throughout the country.
I agree with your point of view in that taxes truly do benefit our country and provide us with better education, health care, social security, etc. Taxes may seem high at this time, but it is because we are trying to spread it out to numerous areas. This is causing us to spread our money too thin in some parts and too thick in others. I believe that taxes are indeed important, but I also believe we need to review where we are placing our money.
Certain individuals have to pay a higher percentage of taxes for the money they have worked to get. This higher tax percentage for having more money is unfair. However, $100 to an average person does not have the same value for a wealthier individual. Having a fixed amount for taxes would also be unfair. I believe that having a fixed percentage for every tax-paying individual would be the most beneficial. Also, lowering the taxes would be beneficial for the economy because people won't be worried about their taxes as much and will spend more money. When people spend money, not only does it boost the economy, but also makes the people happy for being able to have money to spend and happy for their recent purchases.
I agree that it is unfair that some citizens have to pay more, because they make more. To gain so much money, you most likely had to have worked hard, and you deserve what you gain. You shouldn't have to pay more tax money just because you gain a higher profit. However, I don't think anyone should complain about paying to much, because you will always have enough to live comfortably with, even after paying taxes.
I agree that taxing every person the same percentage taxes would be unfair, but the most fair, so people would not be able to whine about their taxes every year. I also think your right that having a flat tax would make people spend more money in the economy.
If all Americans were taxed a flat rate of 10% of their income, a family who earns $50,000 per year would pay a tax of $5,000. and a family who earns 1,000,000 a year would pay $100,000! Obviously in this case the rich are paying "Their fair share"and so is the more middle class family. Whereas in today's tax system a family who earns 50,000 a year will most likely RECEIVE money from the government rather than pay taxes, and the "rich" family will pay almost $350,000!!! CERTAIN Americans are, unarguably, overtaxed. As the article explains in the "yes" section, "the top twenty percent of Americans pay OVER 80% of all taxes". Now, I know some of you may be thinking, "what is wrong with that, they are rich and can afford it". However, I would argue that this idea and principle is not what this country was founded on. This country was founded on the principle of individual freedom and equality of opportunity. If we decide to tax the rich extra simply because they "can afford it", that goes directly against all equality and fairness. The tax increases suggested by Obama aim to raise income taxes on anyone making more than$ 250,000 a year to 39%. Can you imagine having to give nearly HALF of your paycheck to the government to fund programs that you do not even take part in? That would be like living in Pinedale and paying a bill equivalent to almost half of your annual pay for air conditioning that you would never need to use. In my opinion a country in which you have to give HALF of your hard earned money to the government is not a free one at all.
I agree that Americans are over taxed. People who are rich have to work to earn their money then have to work to keep the money. So, why should the government be able to take a lot of money, more than the government needs, from the people in this country that work really hard to earn it?
I agree that it is unfair for the government to tax rich people more than the lower class of America. Everyone should be taxed at the same rate because we all have equal rights. Just because rich people have money doesn't mean that they should have to give most of it to the government.
Americans are over tax especially high income Americans (rich and middle class). If you tax the rich heavily then the growth off jobs will decrease and there will be more in the poor class. If you don’t tax the rich that much then there will be more jobs and more in the middle class instead of the poor class. Money will come to the government if the government taxes less, people will spend more and that money will make businesses grow and hire more people. Plus there’s sells tax and that would go to the government. It’s simple, Americans are over taxed.
I agree with your thought that the amount of jobs are affected by high taxes, but I don't believe that lowering taxes will completely fix this problem. Taxes are a necessity, even if no one really enjoys them. I see you concerns, but I also recognize that there are other factors involved.
The quote “In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes,” by Benjamin Franklin certainly has a point. Taxes will always be a part of the American life, therefore Americans will constantly be asked and ask the question “are Americans taxed too much?” While many Americans may not be able to agree on whether Americans are taxed too much, most agree that taxes are necessary to the American lifestyle. Taxes pay for public education, police and fire departments, military defense, and roads and public transportation. Therefore they are necessary but the question is how much should Americans spend on taxes. Many agree that raising taxes, even if just on the rich will not help the American public. Some believe that raising taxes could improve the economy, however they are wrong. Increasing taxes will only damage economic growth, because people strive to save and invest their money instead of spending it to boost the economy. Thus instead of raising taxes to fix our debt and economy we need to come up with a different solution. Curtis S. Dubay suggests cutting spending, and actually cutting tax rates to improve the ailing economy. I agree that a slight reduction in taxes would be beneficial to the American public. However taxes today are not hindering the public and therefore, they are acceptable the way they are.
I agree with economist Charles S. Dubay, that we as Americans are being taxed too much. Being taxed some is okay because we need to all support the military and armed forces; however, we are over paying on taxes because there does not need to be taxes to pay for health care. People should be able to buy their own insurance and the American people should not have to pay for health care that may or may not be better than what they would have in a private setting. The rich should not have to pay more taxes just because they have more money, likewise, the poor should not get a tax break, everyone lives in this country and everyone should work together, but one person is still one person and should not have to account for more than themselves and immediate family. Thus, as economist Charles S. Dubay says, high taxes with high income could stifle job creation, slow the growth of the low wages, and lead to more job loss, the American people are being taxed too much.
I like how you say that taxes are necessary for the military; however, we pay for unnecessary things such as health care. I also like your points that the rich shouldn’t have to pay more while the poor get breaks. It’s unfair and inconsistent.
I do not believe that Americans are overtaxed. Americans need to pay taxes in order for the government to run successfully. People only pay, at most, a third of their wages in taxes. People who make more money, pay more taxes, but still have enough money to live off of. If you make, say, $100,000 a year, and get taxed 30%, you still have $70,000 to live off of, more than enough for an average person. Richer people are able to be taxed more because they earn more money, and even when their taxes are taken out, they still have more than enough to live off of. Taxes are used for many good things in the country, such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. They help pay for education, police, firefighter, the military, roads, national parks, and many other things that the government does. If taxes were lowered, our education system would become even worse than it is now. The national parks would fall into disarray, lowering tourism to places, and in effect, worsening the economy. Roads wouldn’t be able to be fixed as much, and they would become hard to drive, and damage cars, causing families to be able to spend less on things they want. I do not believe that Americans are over taxed.
I agree with your points. I enjoyed reading this blog because you looked at it logically without letting your emotions get in the way. Many just say Americans are over taxed because they don't look at all the facts and they just speak out of emotion. However like you said Americans still have money to live off of after they pay their taxes and our taxes go to improving our country, so they are necessary, and they really aren't to high.
I totally agree. Americans are not overtaxed because we do need people like police and firefighters. Some people need to look at their taxes from another point of view. Americans need to actually know where their tax money is going. Americans are not overtaxed.
I disagree with you saying that it is good to tax the rich heavier then the poor even though they still have enough to live off of. If you read the whole issue it said taxing the rich heavier actually worsens the economy leading to greater deficits in the future which you and I get to pay off some day.
I disagree and agree with you. I agree that we need taxes to keep our country safe and keep our education system in check. However, I disagree with you when you say that the richer you are the more taxes they should pay. Taxing should be consistent across the boards not based on your earnings.
In my opinion Americans are not overtaxed. Taxes are an essential part of society. In order for Americans to have a civilized and functioning society there needs to be taxes. I think that Americans are paying the right amount for what they are getting. For example, every time you drive on a road or do anything else really, it costs in taxes. So when a third (at most) of your check is pulled out for taxes don’t get angry or upset because you feel cheated out of your money, just remember all the benefits and services that you are receiving. However, I do think that there are too many unnecessary services and or organizations that we as Americans pay taxes to. So really we aren't paying too much money in taxes, we have too many things that require tax payer money.
I agree. Taxes are deferentially apart of society to help the government stand. I like how you mentioned we need taxes to run as a society. I disagree to how you say there are NO unnecessary organizations we pay taxes to. Over all i liked your blog post!
I believe that Americans are not overtaxed. Taxes go towards many things throughout the country. If we did not pay taxes than there would be no money going towards education, roads, and the government would not function properly, taxes are a necessity. If we did not have taxes many factors around the country would not exist, or they would not be very successful. Even though we are all taxed differently, and some people do have to pay a lot its a good thing. If you have to pay a large amount towards taxes you are making a lot of money, and can afford to pay them. The wealthy do have to pay more but they still have more money than needed to live off of. I do not believe Americans are overtaxed, if we did not pay towards different things in the country, it would most likely crumble. Benjamin Franklin said "In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes." Taxes are always going to be around, they are never going to go away.
I believe that the taxes should not be raised but at the same time they should not be lowered. I understand that it there is many people who say the taxes are too high, when in all actuality there is probably not enough. “…labor-backed political program” this statement says so much, it says that the government is riding on the back of the laborers. The government cannot function without the money and will of the people. Though this may not be shown in government now, but the government is supposed to be supported by the people of America. Please feel free to give me your ideas and feedback.
I disagree with you that you think in all actuality there is probably not enough taxes if we had any more taxes there would be a lot more families struggling to pay their bills at the end of the month because they have to pay off their taxes first.
I believe that we as Americans are overtaxed but at the same time I understand and see that without taxes the government could not fund projects such as new roads, schools, and buildings for the American people to use in their everyday lives. However, in the last couple of decades taxes just keep getting higher and higher. A person would think that taxes would have to level out sometime but every time the government needs more money because they spent it on stupid crap we don't need they just raise the taxes on the American people. The Obama administration thinks that taxing the rich heavier is the answer and to spread the wealth is what is needed but this does not help the economy out it actually worsens it. Taxing the rich heavier leads to more revenue volatility which leads to even larger deficits in the future. Taxes were originally meant for good but it seems they are used for more bad then good anymore.
I totally agree with you! Taxes are needed in our economy but they have gotten way out of hand! Raising taxes on the upper class is not the answer and isn't fair. The government spends a ton of money on 'stupid crap' and spends our money to do so.
I believe that certain Americans, namely the middle and upper class, are overtaxed. I agree with Curtis Dubay who says, “High-income earners pay substantially higher tax rates than do lower-income earners.” He goes on to say that raising taxes will damage economic growth by lowering American’s incentive to work, invest, and save. Some people think that raising taxes on the upper class will close budget deficits, but in reality it will lead to larger deficits in the future. At this point, the economy of our country will be greatly hurt if the rich peoples’ taxes are raised and these people would lose a ton of their hard earned money for no reason. It seems to me that rich people are basicallly punished in our country just because they have money. It seems like a pain to be rich because of all the high taxes and laws involving income for the upper class. Most of the rich Americans have worked hard for and deserve their money, and I find it very unfair that they should have to pay more taxes to the government simply because they have the money to do so.
I agree strongly with you, as I also believe that we end up punishing people who are actually working harder. Also, if we continue to raise taxes, it will become to much. Even though some taxes are necessary, it can become overwhelming, mainly to the middle class.
Americans are not overtaxed, in my point of view. Although many of us complain over all of the taxes we are paying, we do not look at all of the good things that come about from taxes. We all take advantage of them one way or another, through education, the use of roadways, national parks, the military, and many other services. So if you truly don’t want to pay any taxes, first think about life without all of the benefits that we gain through tax money. I agree that some taxes are unnecessary, as their organizations do not benefit enough citizens to be funded through our money. Overall, however, I support taxes and understand their necessity.
I completely agree with you comment. Most taxes hold a purpose, and therefore they are not a problem. Americans definitely benefit from taxes, so they are not overtaxed.
All Americans should be taxed a flat rate. If every family was taxed 10%, then everyone would pay their fair share. In today’s system, the rich pay way more than their fair share, and the poor make money in some cases. Therefore, some Americans are overtaxed and some are under-taxed. The ‘yes’ part of the article states that the top 20% of Americans pay over 80% of all taxes”. It is unfair for the rich to be taxed more just because they can “afford it”. They worked hard to get rich, and therefore they should reap the benefits that come with that. The poor people have the same opportunity to become rich and they didn’t capitalize on it. So why should the rich get punished for working hard and the poor get rewarded for being lazy?
We are asked the question Are Americans overtaxed? To fully answer the question truthfully I would say that yes we are. However taxes do benefit us in small ways. By raising taxes just shows how much our government is over spending money we do not have. Taxes do benefit us though, through other purposes. But I think that our taxes should be at minimum and that there should be a fixed percentage of what one has to pay instead a flat rate. Don’t get me wrong taxes are good for many things but do we really know if all that money is actually being sent for its intended purpose. Overall I believe that our taxes should be cut to help our economy and our debt crisis.
Today many Americans believe that we are being overtaxed. I do not believe that Americans are overtaxed but that the government spends too much money. However, I do not think that taxes should be raised considering that “The top 20 percent of income earners pay almost all federal taxes.” (Page 223) Without taxes we wouldn’t be able to pay for the military which keeps our country safe and free. Furthermore, I believe that tax payer dollars go to things they shouldn’t: welfare, food stamps, and Obama Care. In this period of time our taxes are going to Obama care which is wasting our tax payer dollars. I think that most of the percentage of the people that are using food stamps and welfare do not need it. That instead of working they are lazy and rely on the government and tax payers to support them.
Nobody wants to pay taxes, but they are a necessity. The government takes money to run(consider the recent government shut down for example). Taxes are something that have to be in place for America to run, as much as I hate to say it, and as much as people hate to hear it. So, ultimately I do not feel that Americans are overtaxed. I feel that the problem in America is that people are taking advantage of America's willingness to help people through tax dollars. Americans are not over taxed. America has to tax its people in order for it to remain as resilient as it is and has been.
Americans like to believe that they are being overtaxed simply because having to give away a piece of what they worked for is considered "outrageous". To many Americans, being taxed is like asking someone who just ran a marathon to run a couple more miles, or even better, asking someone who just won the marathon to give up a piece of their prize to the people who handed out water. In some ways it is considered "outrageous" or "ridiculous", but taxes are actually beneficial in the long-run for American citizens if--and only if-- they are put towards an appropriate fund/use. The use of taxation can be abused as some government officials may use the money towards funding certain projects that may seem "unimportant", or if the money is put towards helping those that are dependent on food stamps and welfare. What's even more ridiculous is the use of progressive taxation. According to the article, in 2006 "...the top 20 percent of income earners paid almost 70 percent of all federal taxes." (pg. 225) Although the wealthier American citizens do have the advantage of being able to afford paying higher taxes, it is still unfair to the wealthy class to force them to make the larger sacrifice. That's sort of like asking a mother of two children to give up her food for the sake of feeding another mother's twelve children just because the first mother doesn't need the extra food as much as the second mother. Taxes should be made a true flat rate.
In conclusion, taxation is not a bad thing. Americans are most certainly NOT overtaxed, but they are sometimes taxed for unnecessary reasons which then causes American citizens to believe that they are, as a matter of fact, overtaxed. The government today is so corrupt anyways that the issue of being overtaxed is not even that big of a problem compared to other problems...like Obamacare… anyways….
Taxes are not fun for people to pay and no one wants to pay them, but we half to its beneficial for the country in the long run we would be more in debt than we are not with out them. Taxes help shape the United States, it pays for schools, roads, etc. tho we may be over taxed we would louse a lot of beneficial things if taxes were lowered significantly or dropped all together. I would rather live in a place where its safer than live in a play this is filled with danger

ReplyDeleteI agree that Americans are over taxed. People who are rich have to work to earn their money then have to work to keep the money. So, why should the government be able to take a lot of money, more than the government needs, from the people in this country that work really hard to earn it?
DeleteI agree that it is unfair for the government to tax rich people more than the lower class of America. Everyone should be taxed at the same rate because we all have equal rights. Just because rich people have money doesn't mean that they should have to give most of it to the government.
DeleteAmericans are over tax especially high income Americans (rich and middle class).
ReplyDeleteI agree with your thought that the amount of jobs are affected by high taxes, but I don't believe that lowering taxes will completely fix this problem. Taxes are a necessity, even if no one really enjoys them. I see you concerns, but I also recognize that there are other factors involved.
DeleteThe quote “In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes,” by Benjamin Franklin certainly has a point.
ReplyDeleteI agree with economist Charles S.
ReplyDeleteI like how you say that taxes are necessary for the military; however, we pay for unnecessary things such as health care. I also like your points that the rich shouldn’t have to pay more while the poor get breaks. It’s unfair and inconsistent.
DeleteI do not believe that Americans are overtaxed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your points.
DeleteI totally agree. Americans are not overtaxed because we do need people like police and firefighters. Some people need to look at their taxes from another point of view. Americans need to actually know where their tax money is going. Americans are not overtaxed.
DeleteI disagree with you saying that it is good to tax the rich heavier then the poor even though they still have enough to live off of. If you read the whole issue it said taxing the rich heavier actually worsens the economy leading to greater deficits in the future which you and I get to pay off some day.
DeleteI disagree and agree with you. I agree that we need taxes to keep our country safe and keep our education system in check. However, I disagree with you when you say that the richer you are the more taxes they should pay. Taxing should be consistent across the boards not based on your earnings.
DeleteIn my opinion Americans are not overtaxed.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Taxes are deferentially apart of society to help the government stand. I like how you mentioned we need taxes to run as a society. I disagree to how you say there are NO unnecessary organizations we pay taxes to. Over all i liked your blog post!
DeleteI believe that Americans are not overtaxed.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the taxes should not be raised but at the same time they should not be lowered.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you that you think in all actuality there is probably not enough taxes if we had any more taxes there would be a lot more families struggling to pay their bills at the end of the month because they have to pay off their taxes first.
DeleteI believe that we as Americans are overtaxed but at the same time I understand and see that without taxes the government could not fund projects such as new roads, schools, and buildings for the American people to use in their everyday lives.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you! Taxes are needed in our economy but they have gotten way out of hand! Raising taxes on the upper class is not the answer and isn't fair. The government spends a ton of money on 'stupid crap' and spends our money to do so.
DeleteI believe that certain Americans, namely the middle and upper class, are overtaxed.
ReplyDeleteI agree strongly with you, as I also believe that we end up punishing people who are actually working harder. Also, if we continue to raise taxes, it will become to much. Even though some taxes are necessary, it can become overwhelming, mainly to the middle class.
DeleteAmericans are not overtaxed, in my point of view.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you comment. Most taxes hold a purpose, and therefore they are not a problem. Americans definitely benefit from taxes, so they are not overtaxed.
DeleteAll Americans should be taxed a flat rate.
ReplyDeleteWe are asked the question Are Americans overtaxed? To fully answer the question truthfully I would say that yes we are. However taxes do benefit us in small ways. By raising taxes just shows how much our government is over spending money we do not have. Taxes do benefit us though, through other purposes. But I think that our taxes should be at minimum and that there should be a fixed percentage of what one has to pay instead a flat rate. Don’t get me wrong taxes are good for many things but do we really know if all that money is actually being sent for its intended purpose. Overall I believe that our taxes should be cut to help our economy and our debt crisis.
ReplyDeleteToday many Americans believe that we are being overtaxed.
ReplyDeleteNobody wants to pay taxes, but they are a necessity.
ReplyDeleteAmericans like to believe that they are being overtaxed simply because having to give away a piece of what they worked for is considered "outrageous".
ReplyDeleteIn conclusion, taxation is not a bad thing.
Kind of sorry for the long response…. whoops! :)
DeleteTaxes are not fun for people to pay and no one wants to pay them, but we half to its beneficial for the country in the long run we would be more in debt than we are not with out them. Taxes help shape the United States, it pays for schools, roads, etc. tho we may be over taxed we would louse a lot of beneficial things if taxes were lowered significantly or dropped all together. I would rather live in a place where its safer than live in a play this is filled with danger
